How to Design a Home Office Space You Love

Ready for the ultimate guide to home office decorating? The availability of well-paid remote jobs has seen a spike in home office workers. If you work from home full time or just occasionally, it’s likely you’ll need to design a space that allows you to do your best work from home.

Measure Your Space

As with any home design project, the first thing you want to do is measure your space so you know what dimensions you have to work with! Measure the length of all the walls in the room, and note where any windows in the home are, too. This will prevent any oversized furniture mishaps!

Once you have your measurements noted down, it’s time to start looking at home office furniture. The first two pieces of furniture you’ll need for your home office are a desk and chair, of course! These are the bare minimum you’ll want in your home office space.

Home Office Desks

There are all sorts of home office desks that you can use in your home work space.

You may wish to keep a desk in front of the window so you can look out as you work. You may prefer to have a desk in the center of the room where you can have guests sit in chairs on the other side. This is great if you receive clients at your home from time to time.

You could also opt for a fold-down desk if you want to clear the space when the desk is not in use.

Here are a few great desk ideas:

Writing Desk

Writing desks are very simple in form, featuring a rectangular flat surface and four legs. Sometimes a small drawer or shelves are attached. A writing desk is an affordable, basic way to get a desk in your office fast with minimal installation time!

 

Desks with Storage

Sometimes you need a little more drawer space than a writing desk offers. You can find lots of desks with large side drawers or shelving on a hutch that sits on top and goes against the wall. If you have a big office, then these extra large home office desks are perfect for you. These are a few desks with storage to check out:

 

Corner Desk

Corner desks are great for taking advantage of an empty corner in your home. You can go for a larger L-shaped desk with two distinct places to work or go for a space-saving triangular-shaped corner desk that fits nicely.

 

Fold-down Desk

Lastly, you should think about a secretary-style, fold-down desk if you have a particularly small home office space to work with. Fold-down desks can easily be used when needed and folded up when not in use. They are the perfect space-saving home office solution.

 

Home Office Chairs

Next up, you’ll need to pick out a solid office chair to do your work. You could use a simple side chair, or you could invest in a proper office chair with back support. Most contemporary home office chairs will have wheels on the bottom to allow you to move around the length of the desk, but if you don’t have a large desk then this isn’t necessary. Sometimes a standard chair is all you need. Let’s take a look at the options!

Side Chairs

If you’re short on space or cash, then you may want to add a simple side chair to accompany your office desk. Side chairs are compact and functional – letting you sit down without too many complications like height adjustments or armrests. They can easily slide under the desk when not in use. The downside is that these chairs won’t be the most comfortable for long working sessions of several hours or more. I use a side chair to work from home and whenever I get uncomfortable, I take a walk around the house and then get back to work! It forces me to take breaks which I really like.

Rolling Office Chairs

The most common type of office chair you will find is the rolling office chair. This type of chair is generally a good balance between form and function – it’s built for office use, but it comes in a beautiful design, too, so it won’t be an eyesore to look at. It often features a pedestal base that swivels, meaning you can maneuver the chair as you need to.

 

Office Chairs with Back Support

Lastly, if you don’t care too much about aesthetics and you’re big on comfort, then an ergonomic office chair with back support is the right choice for you. If you’re an executive or have a demanding job with long hours, then this is likely the best choice for you!

Most people will opt to have one central ceiling light in their home office for ambient light, in addition to a task lamp that sits directly on their desk for targeted light. If you ask me, the brighter the better when it comes to lighting the home office. I like to feel awake and alive in my office, so I couldn’t stand to work somewhere poorly lit! I have an overhead pendant light as well as a table lamp for early mornings and late evenings in my home office.

Personally, I can’t stand clutter. It prevents me from thinking clearly and getting my work done. That’s why I have lots of different storage bins and boxes to keep things where they need to be. I also have a trash can beneath my desk so I can quickly dispose of things I no longer need. I love to have a clutter-free workspace in front of me!

Lastly, looking at a nice coffee mug while sipping your morning caffeine is always a great way to start the day when working from home!
